Bijli Mahadev is a beautiful temple and has a unique spot in the history and mythology of Kullu valley. The journey to one of the holiest shrine of Lord Shiva is not that tough but is very rewarding.
Bijli Mahadev trek is taken by many pilgrims every year who come here to seek blessings from the lord and protector of Kullu Valley.
Bijli Mahadev is located on top of Mathan Hills of Kullu Valley at an altitude of 2,460 meters above sea level. Bijli Mahadev Temple is one of sacred temples of Himachal Pradesh that has a “Shiva-Linga”. 15 kms from Kullu City this place got its name after the great miracle. Every year a 60 feet high staff of temple attracts the divine blessings in the form of lightning.
This “Shiva-Linga” is struck by lightning and then it breaks into pieces. Then the priest of the temple collects all the pieces and joins them together with the help of butter and sattoo ( a grain mixture) acting as an adhesive after every lightning episode as it shatters to pieces each time.

How to reach Bijli Mahadev ????? ?????? ????? ???? ???????
The trek to Bijli Mahadev begins from Chansari town. Chansari town lies 24 kilometers east from Kullu (H.P.) and is accessible by bus and taxi. From this town, you’ll find a trail at that goes straight to Bijli Mahadev. This solid way twists tough through a kilometer of forest and fresh air.
There are regular buses between Kullu to Bijli Mahadev so travelling is not an issue.

The story of Bijli Mahadev sounds so intriguing. I was not aware that the Shiv Ling is broken by lightning and put together again.

The “Shiva-Linga” must be broken to shreds after all that lightning. It is really cool that it is fixed after each lightning strike ready to be hit again. By now it must be just as much butter and sattoo as original staff!
What an interesting tradition regarding the lightning! The trek looks beautiful and those mountain views at the top are amazing. I have only been to Kerala and would love to visit the north of India someday soon!
We love visiting temples so we will certainly consider visiting Bijli Mahadev when we go to India someday!
