A First-Timer’s Guide to Sri Lanka: Everything You Need to Know Before Visiting

If you’re an Indian traveller considering your first international trip, Sri Lanka is one of the easiest and most rewarding destinations to explore. Whether you’re into beaches, history, mountains or wildlife, this little island packs it all.

How to Reach Sri Lanka from India

Flying to Sri Lanka from India is simple. Direct flights operate from Mumbai, Bangalore, Delhi and Chennai to Bandaranaike International Airport (Negombo), which is an hour away from Colombo. I flew from Bangalore, which only took about 1.5 hours.

Pro tip: Avoid flying via Chennai if you have a layover—the airport experience isn’t great. Bangalore’s airport is far more comfortable with better food and seating options.

One-way tickets from India usually cost around ?6,000–?8,000, depending on the city and season.

Visa for Indians

Indian citizens can get a visa on arrival in Sri Lanka. But for a smoother experience, I’d recommend applying for an ETA (Electronic Travel Authorization) online before your trip. It costs just $20 (approx ?1,650) and gives you 30 days of stay with double entry. I received mine within three days.

Just make sure your passport is valid for at least six months from your date of return.

Best Time to Visit Sri Lanka

If you’re planning your itinerary, December to April is ideal for exploring the west and south coasts—think Galle, Mirissa, and Ella. I travelled in April and enjoyed sunny days with just a few light showers.

This season is also perfect for wildlife safaris, hiking, and the famous Kandy-to-Ella train ride. Avoid May to August if you’re sticking to the south coast due to the Yala monsoon.

Things to Do in Sri Lanka

Hike to Ella Rock

Backpacking in Sri Lanka isn’t complete without a stop in Ella. Book an Ella Day Tour from Galle for a full experience—waterfalls, tea factories, and sunrise hikes included.

Explore Galle Fort

The cobbled streets of Galle are a dream to walk through. Dutch colonial architecture, hip cafés, and ocean views make it one of the best places to visit in Sri Lanka. Consider a Galle Day Tour for a guided exploration.

Whale Watching in Mirissa

I spotted dolphins and blue whales off the coast of Mirissa, an experience I’ll never forget. Book your whale watching tour here.

Visit Cultural Sites

Don’t skip the Cave Temples of Dambulla and the iconic Lion Rock in Sigiriya. Both are rich in history and spirituality and are part of Sri Lanka’s Cultural Triangle.

Learn About Ethical Wildlife Tourism

If you plan to visit elephants, make sure you’re choosing ethical experiences. Read this guide to ethical animal tourism before you go.

Where to Stay in Sri Lanka

There’s no shortage of accommodation, whether you’re a backpacker or a budget traveller. Here are some great options I found:

Getting Around

You can:

  • Rent a tuk-tuk for ultimate freedom (Indians can get a local permit easily).
  • Hire a driver (great for covering long distances quickly).
  • Use public transport like buses and trains. The Kandy–Ella train is a must-do!
  • Rely on Uber or Pick Me for city transport.

Daily Budget for Indian Travellers

Sri Lanka isn’t the cheapest destination by Indian standards, but it’s manageable.

Here’s what I spent daily:

  • Meals: ?800–?1,200
  • Accommodation: ?1,500–?3,000
  • Transport: ?300–?800
  • Activities: ?500–?1,200

Backpacking in Sri Lanka can cost as little as ?3,500 per day if you travel slow and smart.
