Kuala Lumpur International Airport has become a key connecting point for travelers transiting to other parts of Southeast Asia, especially on budget airlines like Air Asia. It’s easy, affordable, and surprisingly smooth to plan a short visit here.

On our way from Singapore to Bali, we stopped over for one day in Kuala Lumpur. We had no expectations and zero plans—just a backpack and a long layover.
If you’ve got less than 24 hours in Kuala Lumpur, this guide walks you through our exact Kuala Lumpur layover itinerary, covering food, landmarks, and quick tips for your stopover.
Is One Day in KL Enough?
This is obviously subjective and depends on what you want to get out of your layover in KL. If you’re just passing through and want a quick taste of the city, one day in Kuala Lumpur can give you a good overview.

With efficient transport and well-planned stops, 24 hours in Kuala Lumpur is enough to explore key landmarks, try some local food, and soak in the city’s energy. It’s ideal for first-time visitors or backpackers on the go.
That said, KL deserves more than a layover. For a slower experience, we’d recommend three days, including a day trip to Genting Highlands.
Klook.comDo I Need a Visa for Malaysia?
Most visitors don’t need a visa for short stays in Malaysia, including those from India. The visa-free entry makes it easy to plan a quick layover in Kuala Lumpur without much hassle.

How to Get from KLIA to the City
Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) is located around 50 km from the city, so you’ll need to decide whether to travel by train, bus, or taxi.

The bus is the most budget-friendly option, but it can be slower, especially during peak hours. A taxi or Grab offers convenience, but prices can vary depending on traffic.
For this Kuala Lumpur itinerary, we recommend taking the KLIA Ekspres train. It runs every 20 minutes and gets you to KL Sentral in just 33 minutes.
How to Get Around Kuala Lumpur
Public transportation in Kuala Lumpur is cheap and reliable, with buses and trains covering most areas. But if you’re trying to explore a lot in one day, Grab taxis are your best bet. They’re affordable, fast, and ideal for a packed Kuala Lumpur layover itinerary.
One Day in Kuala Lumpur Itinerary
Now that we’ve covered the basics and where to stay, here’s how we spent just under 24 hours in KL. We arrived at KLIA at 8:35 am and flew out again at 1:00 am the next day.
Explore Brickfields

Just a 15 to 20-minute walk from KL Sentral, Brickfields is a great first stop. While there’s a separate area called Little India, this stretch is lined with tempting Indian restaurants—perfect for breakfast before diving into your Kuala Lumpur itinerary.
Batu Caves

From Brickfields, hop on a train to reach the iconic Batu Caves. This series of limestone caves houses several Hindu temples and is one of the best attractions in Kuala Lumpur. The towering golden statue of Lord Murugan and the vibrant 272-step staircase are unforgettable. It’s a sweaty climb, and you’ll want to watch out for mischievous monkeys along the way.
Petronas Twin Towers & KLCC Park

Take the train back into the city to visit one of the best places to visit in Kuala Lumpur, the Petronas Twin Towers. Until Merdeka Tower was completed, these were the tallest buildings in Malaysia and the tallest in the world from 1998 to 2004. Head to Symphony Lake in KLCC Park for the best reflection photo spot. By now, it’ll be around 1 PM.

The Sky Box extends out from the ledge and has a glass bottom that makes looking down a thrilling experience.
National Mosque of Malaysia

The National Mosque of Malaysia, or Masjid Negara, was built between 1963 and 1965. It features a 73-meter-high minaret shaped like a closed umbrella and a striking star-pointed dome. The architecture reflects Malaysia’s modern Islamic identity.
