Planning a trip to Laos but not sure where to begin? Whether you’re crossing over from Vietnam, Cambodia or flying in from India, there are some well-tested Laos routes that work perfectly for solo travellers and backpackers on a budget. Based on my own solo travel in Laos, here are three easy and rewarding itineraries to help you explore this peaceful and underrated country.

The Classic Laos Route: Luang Prabang – Vang Vieng – Vientiane

If it’s your first time in the country, this is the ideal Laos itinerary to follow. It’s great for a one-week trip and works well if you’re flying directly from India to Laos.

Start in Luang Prabang, a UNESCO World Heritage town known for its golden temples, night markets and the peaceful flow of the Mekong. You can spend 2–3 days here soaking in the culture, visiting Kuang Si Falls, and exploring temples like Wat Aham.

Next, take the Laos Bullet Train to Vang Vieng, which cuts travel time to under 2 hours. Vang Vieng is all about adventure – think tubing, kayaking, ziplining and cave hikes. I also spotted quite a few cafes with remote work setups, so it’s a good place to take a breather if you’re slow-travelling.

End your trip in Vientiane, the capital city. It’s calm, spacious and good for transit. Spend a night here, check out Pha That Luang, and grab your next bus or flight from here. This route is efficient, budget-friendly, and offers a balance of culture, nature and fun – ideal for solo travel Laos in 2025.

Overland from Thailand: Slow Boat to Luang Prabang

Already backpacking in Thailand? You can enter Laos from Chiang Rai or Chiang Mai and take the classic slow boat down the Mekong River. This 2-day journey is a favourite among travellers for its stunning views and slow pace.

The route looks like this:

  • Chiang Mai to Huay Xai (by bus)
  • Huay Xai to Luang Prabang (by slow boat with overnight in Pakbeng)

The boat is basic but scenic, giving you a relaxed introduction to Laos. Most people stay overnight in Pakbeng, a quiet riverside village with limited food options, but enough guesthouses for the night.

Once in Luang Prabang, you can continue your trip along the Luang Prabang – Vang Vieng – Vientiane route. Exit Laos through Nong Khai, which connects back to Thailand.

This is a great option for Indian travellers doing a wider Southeast Asia tour and adds a unique experience to your India to Laos travel story.

Crossing from Cambodia: Don Det to Northern Laos

If you’re coming from Cambodia, the most popular crossing point is Don Det, part of the 4000 Islands in southern Laos. This is a great place to unwind before heading north.

Here’s how the route goes:

  • Don Det to Pakse (optional stop)
  • Pakse to Vientiane (overnight bus)
  • Vientiane to Luang Prabang (via Laos Bullet Train)
  • Luang Prabang to Vang Vieng to Vientiane
  • Exit through Lao Bao to Vietnam (if continuing your trip)

This route gives you a good balance of slow travel and key destinations. Don Det is peaceful, Vientiane acts as a central hub, and Luang Prabang and Vang Vieng deliver culture and adventure. It’s also great for budget backpacking and solo travellers who prefer overland travel.

Entering Laos by Train from China in 2025

The Boten–Vientiane railway has made it easier than ever to enter Laos by train from China, especially for Indian travellers in 2025. Starting in Kunming, China, you can take a high-speed train to the Laos border at Boten, get a visa on arrival. From Boten station you can continue on to Luang Prabang, Vang Vieng or Vientiane. The train is clean, fast and far more comfortable than long-haul buses. It’s a great option if you’re combining Laos with China or want a scenic start to your Laos journey. I found this route efficient and ideal for backpackers looking to explore northern Laos first.

Important things to know:

  • Visa on arrival for Indian citizens is available at the Boten border
  • Start from Kunming South Station and travel to Boten by high-speed train
  • Download the Lao–China Railway app before your trip
  • A Laos SIM card is needed to book tickets through the app
  • Carry printouts of your passport, hotel bookings and visa approval if needed
  • Trains between major cities in Laos like Luang Prabang and Vang Vieng take under two hours
  • Tickets can sell out during holidays, so book early when possible

Which Route is Best for Indian Solo Travellers in 2025?

If you’re flying directly from India, start with the classic route. If you’re already travelling in Southeast Asia, the Thailand or Cambodia entry routes are perfect add-ons. Laos is affordable, connected, and friendly for solo travellers – just pick a route that suits your travel style.

Whether it’s backpacking through Vang Vieng or riding the Laos Bullet Train through the countryside, Laos has something for every Indian traveller in 2025.
