Shershah Suri and Sasaram were important chapters of our history book. Back in school, when every king was described as a great warrior, it was Shershah Suri who was there for his work on infrastructure. His Tomb, in Sasaram, is still one of the must visit places in Bihar after Nalanda and Rajgir.
Even though Sasaram is located so close to Patna, my hometown, I never got a chance to visit this place. It was in my bucket list for a while and I finally made it there. From ancient monuments to holy shrines, Sasaram had it all.
Sasaram, also known as Sahasram, is a small town located in the Rohtas district of Bihar, India. The place holds immense historical significance as it served as the capital of the mighty Sher Shah Suri, who ruled over India during the 16th century. Sasaram is also the birthplace of the famous Mughal emperor, Akbar the Great.
So, if you are a history buff, a nature lover, or simply someone who enjoys exploring new places, then Sasaram is a destination that should be on your travel bucket list. I am sharing some insights on visiting Sasaram and how you can plan your trip.
How to Reach Sasaram
The best way to start for Sasaram is to come to Patna and then start your journey from here. Sadly, if you are planning to travel by train, there is only one option available, which is the Patna-Sasaram Express. This train runs daily and takes about 2-3 hours to reach Sasaram from Patna. However, since there is only one train, the availability of tickets can be an issue, especially during peak travel seasons.
On the other hand, traveling to Sasaram by bus is a popular option as there are several buses available from Patna that run regularly to Sasaram. The journey by bus takes around 3-4 hours, depending on the traffic and the type of bus you choose. The bus journey is also an excellent way to enjoy the picturesque landscape of Bihar.
If you prefer to travel by air, the nearest airport to Sasaram is the Gaya airport, located about 100 km away. From the airport, you can take a taxi or a bus to reach Sasaram. There are several flights available to Gaya from major cities in India like Delhi, Kolkata, and Mumbai.
Sher Shah Suri’s Tomb: The Most Popular Attraction in Sasaram
The Sher Shah Suri’s Tomb is the most significant historical landmark Bihar. It is the final resting place of Sher Shah Suri, the ruler who established the Suri dynasty in India. He ruled from 1540 AD to 1545 AD. The tomb reflects the Indo-Islamic style of the 16th century with beautiful artworks created on walls and the ceiling. Sher Shah Suri was a prominent figure in Indian history, and his tomb is a testament to his legacy and accomplishments as a ruler.
The grand structure stands tall amidst lush greenery and tranquil surroundings. A lake surrounds the tomb which makes the atmosphere tranquil and pleasant. It is built on a raised platform and has a double dome, which is a unique feature of Mughal architecture. The tomb is made of red sandstone and features intricate carvings and designs.
Inside the tomb, there is a cenotaph that marks the final resting place of Sher Shah Suri. The cenotaph is made of white marble and is carved with verses from the Quran. The tomb is open to visitors, and one can enter and pay their respects to the great ruler.

Tomb of Hasan Khan Suri
The father of Sher Shah Suri, Hasan Khan Suri’s tomb is another significant historical landmark in Sasaram. The tomb is located near Sher Shah Suri’s Tomb and is known for its intricate carvings and designs. Sadly, unlike Sher Shah’s tomb, it is in a depleted condition with most of the artworks gone.
Rohtasgarh Fort
Rohtasgarh Fort dates back to the 16th century. It was built by Sher Shah Suri and is located atop a hill. Reaching this fort is difficult but worth it as you’ll see breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape.
Shergarh Wildlife Sanctuary
Shergarh Wildlife Sanctuary is a must-visit destination for nature lovers. It is home to several species of flora and fauna. Reaching the sanctuary is impossible without your own vehicle but the journey is worth the experience.
Manjhar Kund
Manjhar Kund is a beautiful natural spring, some 50 km away from Sasaram. It is a popular picnic spot that looks very beautiful during the monsoon season.
Pilot Baba Ashram
Pilot Baba Ashram is a spiritual center. It attracts visitors from all over the world. The ashram is known for its serene surroundings. A tall hanuman statue is the highlight of the ashram.

If you’re planning a trip to Sasaram, I would highly recommend visiting during the monsoon season. The nearby waterfalls come alive during this time, and the entire region is transformed into a lush green paradise. It is the perfect time to explore the natural beauty of Sasaram and immerse yourself in the local culture.
