A Window into Ladakh’s History: My Day Trip to Stok Village

Stok Village is a postcard-perfect village 3 hours from Leh City. It was a popular destination among trekkers who frequented here to scale the fabled Stok Kangri trek. But the trek got banned after irresponsible activities by trekking companies, piling garbage, and multiple accidents. Stok Village is now less crowded but more charming than before.

Nestled in the heart of the Himalayan Mountains, the Stok Village in Ladakh is a visual delight. The 14th-century Stok Palace is the highlight among travelers. This magnificent building was once home to the royal family of Ladakh and serves as a testament to the grandeur and splendor of Ladakhi architecture.

At Stok, I was struck by the quaint and charming architecture of the traditional Ladakhi homes. The colorful facades and intricate woodwork just caught my eye. High up on the mountains sits the statue of Buddha in meditating position, keeping a watchful eye on the village. Coming here made me feel like I had stepped back to a simpler, more peaceful era.

Reaching Stok Village

Reaching Stok Village is relatively straightforward. It is located just a few hours drives from Leh. Most tourists come here on a day trip which is a good idea unless you wish to spend a few days enjoying the charms of Ladakhi village away from the hustle and bustle of Leh.

My hostel owner arranged a car for me for 1600 rupees. It was a great way to explore the entire village. The driver took me to Stok Palace and the nearby Stok Monastery. To make the most of your time in Stok, starting your journey in the morning, around 9 am, is best. This will give ample time to explore the village without having to contend with long lines and crowds of tourists.

Solo travelers and budget backpackers in Leh can also take a bus to Stok Village, which leaves from the main town every two hours. But this way, you’ll have to explore the village on foot or hire a local vehicle.

Is Remote Working Possible in Stok Village 

Stok Village is the right place to be if you are looking for an offbeat remote working experience. The village has good 4G coverage from providers like Jio and Airtel. There are numerous homestays offering long-term stay options with wifi. During my visit, I encountered a few visitors working from there.

However, it’s essential to keep in mind that the internet connection in Stok may not always be reliable, particularly during bad weather. The internet goes off during rain, and so does power. You must plan accordingly and inform your employer in advance about this issue.

Best Places to visit in Stok Village  

I won’t call Stok Village a hidden gem of Ladakh. But it does offer a unique blend of natural beauty, rich cultural heritage, and spiritual significance. Whether you’re interested in history or culture or simply soaking up the stunning views, there’s something for everyone.

Stok Palace

This stunning palace was built in the 1820s. It served as the home of the royal family of Ladakh for many years. Today, it’s open to the public as a museum, showcasing the rich history and culture of the region. Parts of the palace offer uninterrupted views of the village and the nearby area. It also has a café and a souvenir shop where you can spend time chilling and admiring the views.

Stok Monastery 

Stok Monastery or Kurphuk Monastery is Perched high on a hill above the village. The monastery is one of the oldest in Ladakh. The Stok Monastery is a beautiful example of traditional Tibetan architecture and design, featuring intricate carvings, colorful murals, and statues. The spacious prayer halls, with their high ceilings and ornate columns, offer a peaceful and serene atmosphere for meditation and contemplation.

Buddha Statue

A giant Buddha statue also known as Maitree Buddha statue stands tall overlooking Stok Village. It is situated is a few meters ahead of Stok Monastery. One can enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding mountains while from here. The prayer flags around the hills make the entire setting look very pretty and photogenic.  

Village Walks

When you are done exploring the village, talk a short walk around the town. There are a lot of old gompas, prayer wheels, and traditional homes that are worth seeing and spending some time at. If you need a friendly local and the season is correct, you can also visit an apricot farm and enjoy some fresh fruits.

Responsible Travel at Stok Village 

Ladakh is on the verge of climate change impact. As travelers, we should be responsible for making our travels as sustainable as possible. To make the best out of your Stok Village trip, ensure you carry no plastic or leave anything behind. Apart from this, make sure you are booking with a local tour operator and booking a homestay instead of a big hotel chain. Many NGOs are working in the region to support the local communities and protect the environment. Consider donating to one of these organizations to help them continue their essential work. Your actions can make a real difference in preserving this beautiful area for future generations to enjoy. These practices will help you find the best experience for your Stok Village trip.
